Tornaado – Instrumentaaltsükkel “Regatt” (Frotee Records FRO001 – 2013)

The year 2013 saw the birth of the Estonian label Frotee Records, in search of the Balearic beat of the Baltics and doing it with vinyl pressings of long-lost compositions. The label debuted with an EP by a band called Tornaado, thus going back to the year 1979 when Lada, the Soviet worker’s limousine, celebrated the ninth birthday and Pepsi hit some upmarket stores in Estonia. The yachting regatta of the 1980 Moscow Olympics was at the gate in Tallinn, the medieval city preparing for the event of sports and peace, actually boycotted by many Western countries. The funk had arrived across the […]

Wochtzchée – T400 (Wochtzchée – 2013)

Estonian producer Taavi Tulev is mostly known for his Wochtzchée project and has completed a new digital/CDr EP called “T400”. The textures of the title track indicate electronica sitting in the front row of the release with compositions moving between electronic clicks & cuts and deep modulations. In “Jääkiired / Ice Rays” fragile layers come up, hovering in the distance like aurora borealis in the Northern hemisphere while the shadowy side with some EBM notes appears in “Masinkaja Masinaga / Machine Delay With Machine”, later flowing into comforting electronica. Dissonant “Algusemaiguline lõpp / The End With A Taste Of Beginning” […]

Hypnosaurus – Untitled / (Re-Played) by Hieroglyphic Being (Porridge Bullet ‎PB006 – 2013)

Technically taken it’s a reissue but not of the type of glossy deluxe editions people are fooled with. The 12-inch, now out on Porridge Bullet imprint, is a reproduction of the material released in 1991 as a friends-only run of 20 cassettes by the Estonian act Hypnosaurus with Aivar Tõnso (keyboards, tapes) and Railo Pals (drums). Also known as Hüpnosaurus, the act later consisted of Tõnso and Raul Saaremets (aka Ajukaja), both till our days playing a pivotal role in the Estonian electronic scene. In 2004 they issued a best-of compilation on Ulmeplaadid.Going back to the beginnings, in the presence of […]

Ancient Methods at Kõue Heli Festival, Estonia (Sat August 3, 2013)

First mentioned in the Liber Census Daniae in 1241, the Kau Manor (Kõue mõis) in Estonia was originally a medieval vassal stronghold. The location dating back to the 13th century is an appropriate setting for a live performance by Ancient Methods, the lord of Berlin’s pitch black techno war funk. The place of action is an intimate but significant festival Kõue Heli, to be held on Saturday August 3, 2013 at Kau Manor, about 50 kilometers South from Tallinn. Ancient Methods has managed to create unique sound combining harsh industrial riffs with complex rhythms for a devastating experience. As the […]
