Shiver Records
from Haarlem, Netherlands was one of the furious labels in the nineties and techno mag Frontpage suspected there could have been a high level of acid contamination in the city’s drinking water. It tells a thing about Erik van den Broek who was behind the label and the project called Shiver. Actually he ran a few dozens of monikers, his acid project Essit Muzique being another one that has caught my attention.
So much about the history: Van den Broek’s comeback on the Belgian retro-minded outlet De:tuned offers unreleased material where the nineties are presented from a different angle. In the opener “Drag Me To Oblivion” heady beats and gleaming pads are searching intelligent deepness and “01100110 01101100 01101111 01100001 01110100 01110010” is a tech funk view on binary numbers that leans on early Warp and Ferox. An the flip, soft broken beats and refined grooves of “Reserv Me” are in a harmonic manner preparing ground for electro-minded study “Breaking Down” with robo-voice before the scary “P Interlude”. A special mention goes to the futuristic sleeve design by Alan Oldham.
