The track “Surkit” has seen several reincarnations since its first, white label release in 1990. Written by Martin Bonds for his Reel By Real project, it represents the raw and a bit clunky phase of Detroit techno. Now the original track, along with the pumping “1991 I-102 Version” has been remastered for an EP, along with four reworks.
Local forces are represented by Keith Tucker and the trio Strand. They produce warm electro groovers in the “Circuitry Remix” and adding bass accents in the “DIODE Reprise”, though refraining from major variations. However their “Reprise” with an ethereal intro before the lift-off is the best and refreshingly different take, which unfortunately comes only as a digital bonus.
A remix by Calibre from Northern Ireland treats the tune from a new angle. Though less Detroit-ish, the version brings the magic of drum and bass for a laid back techstep. After that the UK-US collective consisting of Oliver Way (Detroit Grand Pubahs), Ben Long (Space DJz) and Jon Dixon (UR) are reinventing the original with tinny breaks and rolling backspins. A timely reminder about “Surkit” as a techno classic.
