Welcome to the deparment of reptiles, as these species have been close to the heart of Vesa-Matti Kivioja aka Vesu’s. In 2019 and 2020, the Finnish artist released two volumes of “List Of Lizards”, in total 12 tracks, on the UK label Going Good and Finland’s Vieno, respectively. Now, the material from the latter has landed on a remix EP, out on Helsinki’s Meltdown Deejays.
Blessed are these eight minutes playtime of “Dracaena Guianensis”, when the opener dives into the sea of dub. Deep knocking beats and hidden jazzy layers create a misty and compelling atmosphere. The remix is signed by Area, without any CV provided for this seemingly experienced artist. Next up is “Liolaemus Nitidus”, subject to the Baleacid Mix by the man himself, as Kivioja appears under the Torolf Stendik moniker. A semi-caustic rework of uplifting nature, with Balearic notes for beach raves under the moonlight.
Michele Uccheddu, an Italian producer and DJ based in Finland, is behind the name 03SIDIAN. His remix of “Anolis Rivalis” is driven by hi-hats and clonky percussion, seeking a place between minimalism and techno funk. For a while, the endless loops feel annoying, though gradually the hypnotic effect elevates with every passing minute. Remixed by Otto Taimela, “Dracaena Guianensis” is smooth and kaleidoscopic tech house cut for late-summer nights, the drum arrangement bringing some fire. A well-produced and varied remix pack.
