MIX: Best of 1994 – Part 1

When (another) tour of the 1990’s revival is on, it’s time to recall some originals from that time. At the end of 2024, I decided to travel back three decades and select my favourites. Of course it’s a subjective choice and reflects the taste of one individual, but still will include many tracks that will raise the heart rate of many electronic fans. Here wo go.

 

 

 

 

TRACKLIST

  1. Leo Anibaldi – The Story Become (ACVCD002)
    The intro is borrowed from ACV’s “Alternative Current” mix, a showcase of the highly influential label from Rome. Anibaldi was an overlord of the country’s techno and experimental scene.
  2. Air Liquide – If There Was No Gravity (Rising High Records RSN 79)
    German duo, Khan and (Dr) Walker left behind an immense footprint with their acidic electro-hop tracks under various guises. Check labels like Structure and Force Inc, for example.
  3. DJ Hell – Herz (Disko B db 20)
    Munich’s legend and at home both on techno and electro(clash) floor. The EKG sequence is from the opener of his album “Geteert und gefedert”.
  4. Perceptrons – Visiora (Switch Records Canada WIT 003)
    Hypnosis made in Toronto by Huren and Himadri. The duo was better known as Teste (“The Wipe” on Probe).
  5. D.J. #1 – Free At Last (Dance Mania DM 060)
    Rough beats from the depths of Windy City by Charles Chambers, better known as DJ Funk.
  6. The Traxxmen – P.M.S. (Muzique Records MR 111)
    Percolator beats from a group of Chicago luminaries on the city’s another cult label.
  7. Terrence Dixon – Velocity (Utensil Records UT001)
    A true minimalist creator on Utensil’s debut EP, a co-work with David Gnuoy aka Claude Young.
  8. Gemini – For The Crazy (Relief Records RR715)
    Aaaamazing label from Chicago and Gemini was a real jewel in the roster.
  9. Green Velvet – They Came From Outer Space (Relief Records RR702)
    Relief’s label head, also known as Cajmere, on another lunatic trip.
  10. Gary Martin – Lupita (Teknotika Records GG005)
    Gigi Galaxy’s distinctive sound is special takeaway from the 1990s Detroit. Both the artist and the label are still active.
  11. Suburban Knight – Mau Mau (The Spirit) (UR-029).
    From UR’s brilliant “Dark Energy” album where all tracks are classics.
  12. Schatrax – Four Feather Funk (Schatrax Schat01).
    Mature and groovy tech house from Joshua Brent as Schatrax, on the self-titled imprint.
  13. The Martian – Skypainter (Red Planet RP-5)
    From the album  “The Long Winter Of Mars” by UR’s legendary project.
  14. Balil – Parasight (Warp Records WARP CD23)
    Fell in love with the acidic intelligent trance by Ed Handley (Black Dog, Plaid) when heard it on “Artificial Intelligence II”.
  15. Madhava – Swell (Elusive Records ELU 002)
    From the prog house EP by Mat McLean, a Discogs find some years ago.
  16. Minimal Man – Treatment Feel Pt 2 (Vinyl Solution STORM 86)
    Eon and Baby Ford were behind this massive feelgood track.
  17. Hardfloor – Into The Nature / Hardfloor Remix (Harthouse America P55316-1)
    The 303 aficionados remixed their track from the ground-breaking debut album “TB Resuscitation”
  18. Perez & Dowell – Generatio ! (Music Man Records MM 012)
    Steely grooves by one of the numerous projects of Dutch techno artists Dirk-Jan Hanegraaff and Gert-Jan Bijl.
