A mini album by Taavi Tulev aka HAPE is born for summerly playlists. The Estonian returns to the Finnish label EABE, after the EP “Night Life” in 2024, to explore the sizzling side of electro. The opener “Normal Track Name” gives a flying start to the five-tracker. In a blind test, I would bet on Mono Junk’s Moroder moments, as it bears the same energy and playfulness. And don’t let yourself be fooled by a silent passage in the middle – the show goes on for a while.
Motorway electro “Take Out OK!” reminds of MANASYt’s excellent “Space Coffin”, with electroclash eyeliner applied. In “Sheeple People”, rubbery boogie riffs are touching down in chiptune realms, “Golden Star Balm” sharing the theme. In “Pumdipumm”, HAPE brings a much-welcome change, when synth sparkles are combined with predatory bass line. It leaves alpha bouncers of a metal club to secretly admire the disco inferno across the street. Wrapping up the EP, “Edible Fireworks” is something one would expect to hear at anime screenings.
