About fifteen years after the premiere of “Star Wars”, Underground Resistance conceived an EP that could belong to the soundtrack of the space opus. Already the visual side makes a connection when the typeset of the record’s center label reminds of the movie’s opening titles. Speaking of sound, “The Final Frontier” stands for a truly epic voyage. Produced in 1992 by Mike Banks, the three-tracker has risen into the cult status over the years.
Especially dazzling electro of the title track has been cherished from its inception. When immediately a broad front of 303 bubbles surfaces, it feels like edging closer to the void. However, by emerging gentle pads rays of light will penetrate the darkish atmosphere. Rougher electromotive forces are in action in “Entering Quadrant Five”, when a space vessel of special forces embarks on a rescue mission in the eye of lunar storm. After successful operation, “Base Camp Alpha 808” offers a refuge. This prime example of hi-tech funk dawns with warm percussion and when rolling along, it recalls the sound of the UR’s later album “Dark Energy”.
Now Underground Resistance and Submerge have announced a remastered reissue, for a much-anticipated re-entry of the label’s anthem. Despite of a few previous represses, Discogs prices of “The Final Frontier” have started from about 80 dollars recently. However the music belongs to people and a new run of this timeless record is very welcome. Best listened at full moon, like I did a few days ago.
