Celica used to be a maverick in Toyota’s model family. Not as hotshot as Supra, but still a desirable choice for horsepower hedonism. In a similar manner, the Irish artist Duncan Murphy, known for projects Countersunk or Sunken Foal, delivers an adrenaline rush with the Celica series. Launched in April 2022, the new heat differs from the artist’s sleek electronica and synth output.
The third EP commences with “Celica 01”, a well-oiled hydraulics akin to Stingray 313 and Galaxian. Sharp-as-knife beats, and chopped metal voices are ringing alarm on the floor. Swirling minimal sequences in Robert Hood’s style are showing the way in the next track, numbered as “06”. The other two tracks are born for floor buzz, the title cut powered by quirky techno strings and merry number “12” rounds all up with a funky take. With all the nods to the entries of dance world’s Who’s Who, all Celica triplets are worth a ride.
