Mogano – Sycomore EP (Arboretum ARB002 – 2015)

Drøp’s “Vasundhara EP”, the debut release of the Berlin-based Arboretum Records, laid the necessary groundwork for the label’s next outing, appealing four-tracker “Sycomore EP” by Mogano, which was released in April 2015. Mogano is the moniker of the electronic musician and Arboretum co-founder Marco Berardi, whose artist name means ”mahogany” and refers both to ‘the percussive and string infused nature of his music’, as the label says. After Drøp’s rather darkish ambient abstractions, Mogano seeks a more relaxing environment if to judge by the A-side. Meditative opening “Retama” is purified electronic folk in a time-lapse mode, where elegiac strings and horns lend an exotic and even New […]

Edanticonf ‎– MCMLXXXIX (Wolfskuil Ltd ‎WLTD025 – 2015)

Italian space traveller Edanticonf reports for duty again, this time on Darko Esser’s Wolfskuil. Having debuted in 2011, the artist is foremostly known for a couple of dubbed out and atmospheric pieces on the Canadian label Silent Season, but also dropped a solid EP on M_Rec Ltd Grey Series last year. Presented by the label as ‘a very personal statement from an artist’ – what else it could be – the title may refer to the author’s birth year because musically “MCMLXXXIX” does not have anything in common with the acid house or new beat craze that governed in 1989. Maybe Silent Season’s […]

Teersom – Magerøya EP (Basement Grey Records BEGR-001 – 2014)

After impressive debut on Sähkö’s sub Keys of Life, Niko Pettersen aka Teersom launches own Basement Grey Records with barren tracks carried by wobbly percussion. In the EP named after Norway’s northernmost island Magerøya, the man from Turku in Western Finland, and the city of Sähkö Recordings, heads to frozen trails in the other side of the 60th parallel north. For “Water Breath”, thermal suits and strong headlamps are required when diving into the deep where thuds and creaks are echoing in low-oxygen spheres. The bass is turned up to the maximum, which lends a chunky impression also to the next track “Waves E”, moving on more abstract side with bleepy undertones and reverberated noise, like […]

The Magnecian – Medea (Autochtone_3 – 2014)

“Medea” is exactly the kind of a record to go with a cup of morning latte after hard night out. Not distracting the neighbours and in the same revitalizing the strained body. A whiff of dub and delicate groove make “Nostalgia” the most pleasing cut of the twelve. Despite of dramatic title, “Your Suffering Is Mine” keeps a restrained mood while “Deleterious” rolls along with acid bits. The three-tracker mastered by Stefan Betke aka Pole comes from The Magnecian, which is an alias of Greek producer Stathis Kalatzis, so far primarily known as Mr. Statik. Buy vinyl from Juno Buy […]

PARTY REPORT: TehnoTasand with Mono Junk [DJ], Rajaleidja [Live] in Tallinn (August 1, 2014)

Mono Junk at the decks (Photo: TehnoTasand) A small anniversary for TehnoTasand series of techno parties in Tallinn, when the tenth edition was held in Kultuurikatla Aed, a semi open-air venue close to the Old Town. Nice weather and pleasant ambience, with some people playing table tennis in the yard, attracted a sizable crowd that indicated increasing interest in techno in the Estonian capital.Harder beats were found in so-called Kanal B room where MÜRK resident Artur Lääts got the things moving with a solid set, including a secret weapon, Gareth Wild’s “Get Raw” mixed with ever-present “Losing Control” and the […]

Edanticonf – Human Body Movement (M_Rec Ltd Grey Series MRECLTDGS09 – 2014)

Release date is in July 2014 Four variations on the theme “Movement” by the Italian artist Edanticonf who has previously claimed a central spot in the roster of the Vancouver imprint Silent Season. Usually we can smell dub techno in Edanticonf’s productions and his approach on the EP for M_Rec Ltd’s Grey Series is not hugely different. After being introduced with swirling arpeggios recalling the heyday of Berlin’s MFS, the other tracks maintain the fidgety synth line, placed over a solid set of echoing textures and technoid pulses. The B1 track goes more atmospheric while the final one belongs to […]

Varg – Gravrösens Bortglömda Band (Semantica Records ‎SEMANTICA 68 – 2014)

In “Gravrösens Bortglömda Band”, released simultaneously with S100‘s “Genesis” in Semantica’s recent Swedish round, Varg leaves the Northern Electronics hideaway for urban crowds targeted by the Madrid label. After the ambient intro “Lossning I Dimma, Kallholmen 04.53”, floor-minded “Västra Skogen” twins with ethereal fireballs produced by Abdulla Rashim, Varg’s pal in the Ulwhednar project, while being exposed to thin acid rain we remember from “Misantropen” on NE.Staying in steady motion, “Stupagreve Homuth” delves deeper into dubby spheres while electro-smelling and crawling “Norrlandsbrigad 69R” is the most wolfish cut of the selection that mostly feels like drinking from a crystal-clear source. <a href=”http://semanticarecords.bandcamp.com/album/varg-gravr-sens-bortgl-mda-band-semantica-68″>Varg – […]

DUST OFF: Huren – Huren’s Kaltbrüchig Acideath (Zhark Recordings 00007 – 1999)

When interviewed by the Tea And Techno blog, Zhark Recordings co-founder Kareem reflected upon the twists and turns of the label, saying the seventh release opened an entirely new direction. After Zhark07 people started shaking their heads, because the EP’s sound did not follow the label’s minimalistic Detroit approach. The culprit for this dramatic move was Canadian Dave Foster who had first garnered attention with the project Teste on Plus 8. Later, as part of the duo Perceptrons, he focused on acid releases before reanimating in 1999 his obscured Huren moniker, dropping “Istropolitana EP” on Qube and debuting on Zhark with notorious “Huren’s Kaltbrüchig Acideath”. NX1 / Adriana Lopez – Grey Report 03 (Grey Report GR03 – 2014)

Instead of pretentious statements about delivering mysterious and timeless techno, NX1 and Adriana Lopez just give simple instructions: Move your a**. The label of the Colombian-born Barcelona resident Adriana Lopez reports for the third time, presenting a split release by Lopez herself and Samot & Surit aka NX1 from Barcelona. In “GR1” the Spanish act gives a harder twist to the Basic Channel legacy with billowing synth patterns and “GR2” edges closer to mean techno textures. On the B-side the floor is taken over by Lopez’s “A Secret Behaviour”, running on a stringent and fat synth loop and passing the baton to another rough […]
