***** Various – Synthesize Minds Vol. 1 (Subsonic Ebonics EBON-VA-001 – 2026)

Detroit heads have been holding their breath in anticipation of the third edition of “Interstellar Fugitives”. First, Underground Resistance released it for The Movement weekend as a 7×7” white label set of 200 copies. In September, another batch popped up at Submerge, to only sell out quickly. While that new instalment is indisputably a milestone, there is a lot more happening in and around Detroit.

Subsonic Ebonics launched at the beginning of this decade and my first contact with the label was “State Of Emergency”. On that EP, two artists from shores of Great Lakes, the label founder Huey Mnemonic (Flint, MI) and Drake Strange (Chicago, IL) teamed up for an rough electro assault.

Now the ten-track compilation “Synthesize Minds Vol. 1” features new and not so new names from Detroit, Chicago, and NYC. 3rd Sphere opens with punchy minimalism (“Sprawl”), Alejandro Marenco practices percolator tribal (“Gusano”) and D. Strange launches a search of outer space colonies with five minutes of agile basswerk.

Huey Mnemonic and Sard are keeping focus on the floor with Detroit-approved precision engineering, while Kanyon follows the footsteps of Purpose Maker (“Glued2G”). For me the electro highlights are Dopplereffekt mimicking RMM (“H Type Defect”) and Shawescape Renegade‘s gloomy jit “Monstrosities”. Hot and slow funk study comes from Gladstone Deluxe and Kamau Baaqi trims the pace to a abstractish stepper.

It’s absolutely worth to mention that another two compilations from Detroit decorated the year 2025. On “Submerge Sessions Vol.1”, the legendary distribution platform presented 14 artists, a few of them found on “Synthesize Minds” too. Right before Christmas, which may have been the reason it went under my radar, Detroit Techno Records released “From The Basement with Love”, featuring Suburban Knight, B.Calloway, Ray 7 and many more.
