***** Various Artists – Detour 007 (DETOUR007 – 2024)

Pittsburgh’s own label Detour has compiled an outstanding snapshot of the electronic sounds in and around the Steel City. Tony Fairchild from the local is / was fraternity introduced the album in a mailout several months ago. After the first, superficial listening I had been hoarding it in anticipation of something special. The wait has been rewarding, as “Detour 007” offers a cross-section of tracks with floor functionality in the mind.

The most merited contributor is Shawn Rudiman, who convincingly opens with rolling and dubby “Frustration Theory”. Action-prone Gladstone Deluxe proclaims “Pack Ramen 2 Spicy” by sampling ‘rude boy’ over lively bass growl and distorted hi-hats. Thereafter, airy chords are lifting the tech house cut by Doc Sleep (“I Like You All So Much”). In the winding “Of One Kind or Another”, Naeem is weighing partnership with breaks and jungle moguls, while Paul Fleetwood proceeds with groovy downtempo in “Quasar Cowboy”.

Then the next two tracks are my favourites. Harsh bass line in “Grip (Lateralx Dub)” by Torvvo leads to grim and atmospheric electro, straight from the heart of heavy industry. In “Arches” by slowdanger, deviant fairies invite to a ferocious trip. Nick Breinich’s semi-acidic “Reclaim Sink” explores the mysteries of sewage network and “Emmoh” by Davis Galvin sets up a carnival with Middle Eastern inspired beats. Gusto is saying goodnight with placid chords in the aptly titled “Closing Credits”.

However, by the end of 2024, the album’s European distribution seems to be pending, but one can always head to the label’s Bandcamp to choose either digital or vinyl version.
