*** Various Artists – Sounds For The 4th Decade (Meltdown Deejays Recordings MLTDWN-010 – 2024)

Tropical September in the shores of Gulf of Finland is suitable time for giving a spin to the new various artists record by Meltdown Deejays Recordings from Helsinki. Grab your mocktail for an easy-going and warm session, conceived by four producers from Scandinavia.

Two merited artists are playing it safe. Finland’s Tuomas Salmela, here under the name Phonogenic, rolls out rattling and dubby tech house in “Suspicion”. Harald Björk from Sweden is daydreaming on the patio with “Dubbel Tvekan”. Though sticking to the dub infused theme, “Five Pipes” by 03SIDIAN is a more intense affair. Båssanova makes a memorable contribution, when flirting with neo trance in vocoder aided “Do U See Me (Like I See U)”. Thus the artist from Vaasa, where the label’s foundations were laid thirty years ago, serves the most floor-friendly track.

The vinyl EP, limited to 250 copies, is a sampler from a digital album, which celebrates the Meltdown’s 30th anniversary. In addition to the label mainstays Vesa-Matti Kivioja aka Torolf Stendik and Kollektiv Jurmo, the compilation unveils a few brave and potent appearances. Such as a freaky rhythm mystery (“Lid Theory”) by deadroid, robotic electro song by RV820 (“Faithful Servant”) or Onega’s steelworks stepper “Cor”. These talents earn some extra points for the compilation.
